Elastography

The ultrasound elastography is a new method for the differential diagnosis of the malignant tumors compared to benign tumors. Elastography is not used to detect tumors but only to distinguish cancerous tumors from non-cancerous tumors.

Elastography is based on the fact that malignant tumors are harder, more incompressible and less elastic than benign (which was often noted by palpation of larger breast tumors)

Combined with ultrasound elastography had the best results in the detection of breast cancer and reduced the percentage of biopsies

A cancer tumor is 10-100 times as hard as compared to the normal tissue surrounding it. When applying compression or vibration, the tumor deforms less than the surrounding tissue.

Measuring elasticity caused by tumor compression, we can estimate tissue hardness, which is useful in the diagnosis of breast cancer.
